Airport expects 2009 surplus despite drop in passenger traffic
HALIFAX, N.S. — The number of passengers served by the Halifax Stanfield International Airport dropped in 2009 from a record level set the year before.
Despite the lower number, however, the airport authority says a financial surplus is expected.
The airport, the largest in Atlantic Canada, served more than 3.4 million passengers last year, down from 2008's record of more than 3.5 million.
The airport authority says the dip didn't come as a surprise given the global economy.
Tom Ruth, authority president and CEO, says a diligent business plan is responsible for the anticipated financial surplus for 2009.
The final numbers will be released at the authority's annual meeting in early May.
